Crohn’s Disease What is it?

If, like me, the first time you were diagnosed with Crohn’s Disease some of the phrases and terms used really need explanation. For me, and my partner, what is colitis or what is Crohn’s disease became the key questions needing answering. The trouble was the plethora of information rather than the scarcity.

Then from this vast bucket of information how do you find out if what you are reading is based on fact or is it some very individualistic view? What I’ve tried to do below is to give our readers some basic definitions as a certain starting point from which they can begin their journey of discovery into Crohn’s disease what is it?

Crohn’s Disease What is it ; in medical terminology?

What is Crohn’s disease as defined in medical terms?
Crohn’s disease is one of the inflammatory bowel conditions of the intestines which cause mild to severe ulcerations on the linings of your bowel. It leads to bleeding and other problems which can be detrimental if not treated immediately. It has other medical terms such as regional enteritis, ileitis, colitis, or terminal ileitis.

Together with ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s disease has no possible medicinal cure. However, it does have a history of successful medical management programmes.

Crohn’s Disease What Is it ; doing to your intestines?

What is Crohn’s disease at an earlier stage? During the acute stage of the disease, shallow crater-like ulcerations appear on the stomach which causes little to no problems at all. However, certain symptoms appear during this stage such as mild tolerable pain, diarrhoea and the like. With time, the erosions become deeper and bigger that they cause problems which are ultimately developing into true ulcers. When these ulcerated portions of the stomach puncture the bowels of the intestinal lining, it can cause bleeding and can lead to complications like infection. As early as possible, the disease should be given attention to rid yourself from severe complications.

Crohn’s Disease what is it and how is it treated?

As we discussed in an earlier paper Crohn’s Disease treatment is dependant upon the severity and ‘phase’ in which the disease is passing.

Normally the treatment is designed to focus on several aspects at once.

1. The inflammation symptom of the disease.
2. Reducing the pain.
3. Reviewing and controlling any personal symptoms and complexities being felt by the patient.
4. Reducing the prospect and severity of future attacks from the disease.

Since the disease is genetically routed, there is no possible cure that can totally eradicate its existence so as a consequence the treatment given is only supportive of the signs and symptoms felt by the patient. see Crohn’s Disease Treatment.

Crohn’s Disease What is it? Management

Everyone’s target and complete focus with Crohn’s Disease is the management of the condition. We all focus upon the management of the condition. Preventative action is better than just waiting (or indeed aggravating your condition) for the next attack.

To keep the condition from being too debilitating it is essential that you adopt a well-balanced, nutritious diet. By maintaining your vitamin and nutrient levels between flare-ups, you can decrease complications.

So work with your doctors, read and explore all about your condition, knowledge will help you take away the mystery and the fear and help you manage your condition and your lifestyle.

and Finally

You may come across alternative treatments or medication that appears of interest or has a claim to providing a source of relief. Great, but do discuss any other treatments you are taking with your consultant or doctor. Management of your condition can only be done successfully by certain knowledge of what you are eating drinking and doing.
